Are You Delusional?

2011 Bill Pearl Classic MC Job

Is it wrong to see yourself in fantastic condition?  Walking around with the 6-pack of your dreams with the waspish waist and perfectly shaped legs?  Wouldn’t it be cool to have people compliment you on your physique – “Wow…you look incredible!”  How about the set of arms you’ve always wanted and admired on so many others – “OMG, I’d DIE to have arms like yours…”  Is it wrong to think like that?  Absolutely not!  Are you delusional for thinking like that?  Not in the least.  That’s how I process.  That’s how YOU should process.

It’s not delusional to want to look better, feel better, and function better.  That’s how I think every single day.  I’ve never woken up in the morning thinking, “I’m so glad that I’m so deconditioned that I can’t do anything,” or “Man, I’d sure LOVE to pack on about 25 lbs of blubbery, jiggly fat throughout my body and on my face…”, but I HAVE gotten out of bed thinking and saying, “This is it…8 more weeks until I look absolutely phenomenal at the next show” or “The waist is tight in my size 30 jeans…time to clean up the foods” (Yes…I said size 30 waist…and that’s off-season!).  I’m not the biggest guy in the world but every day I strive to be the best and have the best body I can be and have.  Are you doing that?  Some of you are nodding right now thinking, “The Dr.’s right…I need to change my mindset.”

Perhaps you are delusional – just in the wrong way.  Perhaps you’re delusional and have convinced yourself that getting in shape is an impossibility for you – that you’ll never be better or beyond where you are right now.  Perhaps you’re delusional and accepted that the weight issue you possess is genetic or heredity and that you’re programmed and destined to look that way, and nothing you do will change it.  Perhaps you’re delusional and think that your sickness, illness, or disease prohibits you from doing anything.  Maybe you are delusional…just in the wrong way.

Bodybuilding pose drawing - single arm bicepsYou need to be delusional in the right way.  You need to understand that getting in shape IS possible – in fact, it’s not only possible, it’s highly probable if you’d just get off your butt and start doing something!  It’s not gonna happen if you skip breakfast, have coffee and M&M’s all morning long, eat a junk lunch, have a donut and more coffee mid-afternoon, and pig out at night wolfing down the leftover pizza with a couple of cold ones and then sitting in front of the TV eating Chips Ahoy and Bon Bons.  It’s not gonna happen if you don’t exercise by lifting weights and doing cardio.  You have to work at it.  “But Doc, you don’t understand…my joints hurt, I have a bad this and that, I work all day, I work too hard, I’ve got kids, I have to take care of the hubby, I can’t afford it, I get up too early, I stay up too late, I don’t have time, I don’t like to workout, yada, yada, yada!  Excuses all!

Look, I’ve said this a thousand times if I’ve said it once – we ALL have exactly the same 24 hours in a day.  How we choose to use those hours is entirely up to us.  We find time for what’s important to us, would you not agree?  No matter how busy you are, you’ll always find time to get your son or daughter to the next practice or recital.  You’ll always find time to meet your girlfriend for Starbucks or kick it with the guys on the golf course.  But for some strange reason we don’t find, make, or have time for our health and fitness.  And then we complain about how tired, how sick, and how awful we feel and look, or wonder how we got that way.  Negative delusion.

A new client just joined my gym today.  She came in with a friend.  She was telling me about how she needed to lose ‘all this weight’.  I listened.  And then she proceeded to tell me about why she couldn’t lose ‘all this weight’…

“I work all day and I’m always running around and when I get home I’m tired, and I don’t feel like cooking or making anything so all I do is eat what my husband makes.”

I nodded, “I know what your problem is…”

“What?”

“You’re lazy…”

I’ll spare you the details after that, but let’s just say that by the time the conversation ended, she saw my point of view.  She was delusional in a negative way.  She’d convinced herself that she was busy and tired, and because of that she’d never be able to achieve her goals and ‘lose all this weight’.  I don’t have time to listen to people complain when THEY’RE the cause of their own problem.  I’ll help you, but you’ve gotta be ready to help yourself.  You have to not only WANT to change, but be willing to WORK at change.  This is a hard concept for many to grasp.  What you want, and what you do to get what you want are two different things.  The want is simple and easy.  The work at what you want is hard.  A great line that I heard today in a new business venture I’m getting into went like this, “If you’re willing to do the things that most people won’t, you’ll have the things that most people don’t!”  Truer words were never spoken!  It doesn’t matter what you’re going after in life – you have to be delusional to achieve it.  You have to believe so strongly that you can achieve it (and then start working toward it) that the rest of the world will think you’re crazy…or delusional…J  Peace…
