Be Perfect Today: Part III – Tell Me You Will…Tell Me You Won’t…Don’t Tell Me You Can’t

RSCN1462I accepted long ago that I’m not a morning person. Yet I realize that this blog series would work best for those individuals who’d like it to read first thing in the morning.  So here’s what I propose.  Noooo…I’m NOT gonna start waking up at 4 am to write a blog.  That goes against my religious beliefs and constitutional rights.  But I DO suggest that you save it until the following morning, when YOU wake up at 4:30.  The Brotha loves ya’ll, but not dat much.  Now…back to the lesson at hand…

Usain Bolt - LuckToo many times we limit our own potential by simply saying or thinking, “I Can’t”.  While this may be true in some instances, for example, beating Usain Bolt in the 100 meter dash when you’re only 5’2” tall with the speed of a turtle, you CAN improve upon your current potential.  Everyone can.  Let me repeat that.  Every. Single. One. of you can become better, and in many instances, significantly better!  You just have to stop telling yourself “I can’t”.  “I can’t follow this food plan for 20 weeks!”  Yes you can.  “I can’t do double cardio sessions!”  Yes you can.  “I can’t find the time to do up to two hours of cardio a day!”  YES. YOU. CAN!! Remember yesterday’s blog in which I said this is simple, but not necessarily easy? This ain’t rocket science, folks.

Pete-Carroll-Russell WilsonI’d rather have a person tell me up front that he or she WON’T do something rather than tell me they CAN’T do it. My thought process is like this…”Wait a minute.. YOU came to me (or any Competition Coach), said you wanted to do a show, and then when I told you what you needed to do, you balked? You suddenly started finding and making excuses as to why you couldn’t do this or that.”  If contest prep is that hard for you, then BAG COMPETING, but don’t lie to your coach about what you’re doing when you’re NOT doing it. A good coach will know anyway.  Some won’t say anything because they don’t want you to leave them.  Some will call you to the carpet on it (I do that initially).  And some (also like me) will simply give up on you and move on to the next person.  If this is a harsh statement to you, think of it this way.  If I were Coach Carroll of the Seahawks, and you told me you ‘couldn’t’ do something when I knew perfectly well you could, how long do you think I’d keep you around?  You’re right, I’d terminate the relationship quickly.  In other words, you’d be cut.  As a Competition Coach, I may not necessarily terminate the relationship because of contractual obligations, but I’d definitely re-direct my attention towards those team members who didn’t make excuses. Moral of the story?  Do what needs to be done.  Every day.

The following is from a fellow Competition Coach and friend of mine, Kobie Wyatt’s FB page.  I loved what he had to say so I decided to share to everyone.  Take a read…

Kobie Wyatt-TeamGro - Melissa“Team Gro bikini competitor, Melissa Vandall, is weeks out from her first show and has worked very hard to look her best. Rest assured we didn’t take it easy on her and she earned every bit of what you see. We have big plans for Melissa as she gets her feet wet and earns the right to compete on the national stage. She is 100% coachable and very easy to work with. As soon as I make adjustments to her prep, she does it right away. She has never been on stage before so this is a clear example of hard work and dedication. She’s never had a cheat meal and we don’t count macros. Just pure hard work and precision. We’re very proud of you, Melissa, and look forward to seeing the finishing touches in a few weeks.”  Kobie went on to add in one of his comments, “She’s been dieting for the last 6 months. You’ll get to see before/after comparisons after her show. Team Gro doesn’t believe in cheat meals, it makes you weak. Why cheat when you’re willing to work hard…”

Kobie and Team Gro have the right mindset – hard work yields results.  She didn’t get said results by saying, “I Can’t”.  She found and made ways to accomplish her tasks.  That’s what you have to do as well.  Find a way. Make a way. Or get out the way, because someone else is doing what needs to be done.  To net this out, what will you have to do?  Be perfect today.
