Be Perfect Today: Part XXI – Just Do It

The Thinker2“The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell or a hell of heaven.” John Milton

We’re less than 3 weeks until the E-Cup. How are you approaching your contest prep? Is this something you HAVE to do, meaning it’s a chore, it’s drudgery, it’s hard, and you don’t like it? Or is this something you GET to do, meaning it’s a privilege, you’re excited about it, and you look forward to the challenges and changes. How you think affects how you act. How you act affects how and what you do. How and what you do affects how you execute. How you execute affects how you’ll look. You’re either liking this journey or disliking this journey. Either will have a profound effect on your end result.

Yesterday I saw over 100 competitors take the stage in a Non-NPC event. As I said in yesterday’s blog, a few looked great, some looked okay, and some looked bad. Again, since I don’t know their ‘story’, it’s not my place to say whether they belonged on the stage or not. But I CAN say that not every competitor up there who looked bad had problems. They simply didn’t do work. And it showed. I saw pros that weren’t dialed in. I saw figure competitors spilling out of their suits. Bikini competitors with a little too much wiggle and jiggle. Female physique and female bodybuilders with a lil’ extra junk in their trunk. Male bodybuilders and physique competitors who looked 4-8 weeks out. This shouldn’t be, folks.

Personally, I think too many people settle for ‘That’s good enough’ when prepping. They don’t have that warrior mentality. Oh, they wanna step onstage, but they don’t wanna put in the work to be at their BEST onstage. I was talking to a friend today who said, “Doc, I read your blog on “Perfection was Accomplished” and it made me realize “He’s right. I need to step up my game.” We talked about some changes he needed to make. I expect him to change significantly in the next week or two.

Lion-Everyone-wants-to-be-a-beastThe biggest area I see competitors falling down in AFTER their mental discipline is their nutrition. People cheat. That’s a given. But I’ve said too many times that, all things considered, the victory goes to the person who cheats the least. Why? BECAUSE THAT’S THE PERSON WHO WILL MORE LIKELY THAN NOT HAVE THE BEST LOOK!! Yes, I’m cyber shouting at you guys, because I’ve spent this entire blog series doing my best to get people to lock in mentally to what they need to do nutritionally, and I saw imperfection on stage yesterday. It’s as simple as that. You can’t tell me that every single competitor did everything he or she was supposed to do for 16-20 weeks when it came to their foods. And I seriously doubt that every competitor followed their cardio schedule as outlined, if they even had a cardio schedule. Too many competitors sucked!

I would absolutely love to see a local show where the TOP TEN all looked great, and it was a battle for every placing. Wouldn’t it be cool if your coach said, “You’ve got a Top 3 look the morning of your show.”, and then backstage every single person in your class had a Top 3 look? Ten guys or girls standing onstage, and they all look incredible. The audience would go CRAZY over that! What a battle it would be! But what I saw this past weekend was the exact opposite. Several classes walked out and it was the “Best of the Bad” show. No one looked good, but first place had to be awarded to someone, so he or she gets it. The audience is uninspired over looks like that.

Very few people will be honest enough to tell you how you look. I saw one guy I knew at the show. “How’d I look, Doc,” he asked? “You weren’t hard enough.  Too smooth. If you would’ve lost another 5-7 lbs of bodyfat, you would’ve easily cracked top 2 or 3. You’ve got the size, the shape, the muscularity…you just weren’t hard enough.” That’s the point of contention I make with my team every week – you have to get hard.

Look guys, this is a simple game. Not easy, simple. Get your head in the game. Follow your food plan without exception. Do your cardio as outlined. Continue to lift as hard and heavy as your body will allow given the lower carbs. In other words, Be Perfect not just today but every day for the next 3 weeks.
